Blythe and Clive

Talking to my sister Anna, she mentioned the uncanny resemblance between my sweet baby Blythe and our dear old friend Clive (Staples Lewis). She even sent me this side-by-side to prove her point.
At first a little offended at the suggestion,
I have to concede... she's got a point.
See for yourself!

My babe is The Babe!

Two weeks ago during a planning meeting at work, I let the guys know that based on the way Rivka was feeling, she thought that she was probably going to have the baby on Tuesday of the subsequent week, so they could expect that I would be out of the office. They laughed and made wisecracks about crystal balls, but they don't know Rivka. She is the Babe Ruth of all things child-bearing. She's an all-star, laborer of the year, M.V.P. (Most Valued Pregnant-lady) etc., etc. Like The Babe, she called her shot, and the rest is history. She is truly amazing.

Not only did she call the "when" of little Blythe's arrival, but also the "how". I'm not sure if I am just the worst planner in the world, or a masochist, or both, but it seems that every time we are having a baby, I throw us into some sort of topsy-turvy life event. With Matilda, we had just moved to Chicago in the dead of winter and bought our first (and very fixer-upper) house weeks before she was born. With Eloise, I was contemplating career changes and we were steeped in remodel projects (including the bathroom wherein she was born). Now, just to top them all, I decided that we should buy a very "needy" house, while starting a new job, while getting out of our crazy landlady's rental place early which caused us to have to live at my parents' house on an air mattress since two of my siblings and their spouses are also living at home for the summer (there goes my chance at husband of the year), while we work like dogs to make the house habitable... I'll just leave the rest of the details out. We may need to stop procreating, because I'm afraid of what kind of mess I'll get us into the next go 'round.

Anyway, back to the "how"... Since our life was/is so up-side-down, and since Rivka's labor with the first two was so lightning fast, she had very specific plans for how she wanted things to go with Blythe's delivery. First, although our experience having Eloise at home was wonderful, Rivka ABSOLUTELY did not want to have Blythe on the air mattress in Mom and Dad's study (strange, I know), or anywhere at their home for that matter. Second, she did not want to have Blythe in transit to the birth center (like what almost happened with Matilda). Rivka wanted to have an unhurried, stress-free labor and delivery (something we really haven't yet had). So, our plan was to leave immediately at the very first sign that things were happening. I know that the Lord hears Rivka's prayers, because we got exactly the "how" she was hoping for.

Tuesday morning, at about 12:15AM, I was gently encouraged to wake up with the words "I think this baby's a comin'..." I shot up, gathered my faculties and began asking some of the typical questions about contractions, where's the bag, etc. I got dressed, made Rivka a bed in the back of the van, and we were off. We made excellent time and arrived at the birth center a little after 1:00AM, greeted by our wonderful staff of midwives.

Although something was definitely different with Rivka's contractions, etc. things did not progress as quickly as we are used to. We spent time lying in bed, munching on cereal, talking with the staff and walking around the parking lot. I admit that I was feeling kind of silly about having come all this way and having woken up the staff. A little after 2:00AM while Rivka was in the W.C. and I asked one of the midwives when we would call it a false start and go home. She said that Rivka was progressing and that we would stay until progression ceased or reversed.

Sometime just before 3:30AM the progression accelerated and Rivka asked for the tub to be filled. She labored in the tub for the next 40 mins or so and then with no more than 2 good pushes, Blythe Penelope Wilcoxson entered the world. She (Blythe) cried immediately (so did I), and took great big breaths. She started nursing right there and has barely stopped eating since (she gets that from me). When she isn't eating, she sleeps and sleeps (she gets that from her mama). I'm happy to report that she grows cuter by the minute. I can't wait to see her little personality start to shine through.

I am incredibly blessed to have another little lady to adore. I'm so grateful that everything went perfectly well and that everyone is safe and sound. I am again in awe at my amazing M.V.P. of a wife. I really think she hit a homerun with this little girl.

Introducing...

We are excited today to unveil to you, gentle reader, the newest, most updated and upgraded version of perfection, Blythe Penelope. She arrived safely Tuesday July 2nd, 2013 weighing seven pounds, fourteen ounces, measuring 21 inches long. She has brought a wonderful feeling of joy into our home and hearts. How strange, and how wonderful it is to welcome new life into the world.

Hmmm, it's been a while...

In fact, it's been just over a year now since we packed all our earthly possessions into (or onto) our cars
and tearfully waved goodbye to our home in Illinois.
Sustained by pepperoni sticks, Justin Bieber, and our dear and sainted friend Kaytlyn,
we made the long trek across the country,
the ladies and babies in one car,
Chace in the other, with just enough room to breathe.
We kept up a pretty decent pace, even with two tiny tots, but we kept our sanity by stopping along the way to visit dear friends, including old work-out buddies,
roomies,
neighbors,
beautiful places,

and favorite haunts from the college days
(like here, where Chace proposed--the first time...)

Finally we arrived in the Great Northwest,
land of the cousins,
Mima's bountiful garden,
boats and lakes,
and magical walls covered in chewed gum.
In Portland, the girls feasted at will on peas and cherry tomatoes from the garden,
Chace had a blast working with my brother-in-law,
and I had a quarter-life crisis in which I decided it was a good idea to get a buzz.
Then in the new year, we migrated north a bit and Chace started his job with Boeing in Seattle, where we continue to have all manner of adventures and where we are constantly pinching ourselves to see if we are dreaming. Are we really back in our beloved northwest? Half an hour from the mountains and two from the sea? Is it really only a fifteen minute trip to Grandma and Grandpa's for Sunday dinner? Only three hours to Mima and Pa's for Memorial Day? Does Chace really have a job that he loves to wake up for? Do I really get to wear flip flops all winter long? Did we really just buy a house with a Washington address?
And best of all, is it really only a few days until we can expect to meet our third baby girl?!
Whenever we say we're expecting our third girl, people look sympathetically at Chace and say something like, "Awww. Sorry, Dad! Are you going to keep trying for a boy?" Whereupon I have to resist the urge to assure them that, not to worry--as soon as we've nailed down our reproductive plans, they'll be the first to know. Whereupon Chace, taking the high road, looks lovingly at me and the girls and says something like, "What can I say? I try to surround myself with beautiful women!" Little do they know that he doesn't mind one bit being the main man around here. He's got three, soon-to-be-four Wilcoxson ladies completely crazy about him.
Does he look sad about that?

3 going on 13

Heaven help me.
There are some craaazy things coming out of this girl's mouth lately,
but my favorite quote this week (upon buckling her,
screaming hysterically, into her carseat to leave
Grandma and Grandpa's house):

"MOM! You are ruining my
ENTIRE LIFE!!!"

In the words of a wise friend:
"You know you're doing something wrong if your kids don't hate you at least some of the time."
Let's hope!

This little piggy...

... had a birthday!

There aren't words for the joy this little twerp brings to our lives.
She is happy, playful and sweet, with just the right wicked little pinch of sass.
Happy first birthday, Eloise Margaret, my jolly little piglet!

Happy Birthday Matilda!

As I realized yesterday that I had neglected to post a birthday greeting to my first born, I realized also all the other things I had neglected to write about. So pardon me as, over the next few weeks I play a little catch up--not for you, but for me, as blogging is pretty much the only journaling I do. So I WILL get up to date. But not today. And not this week. Too much fun to be had. All about which I'll tell you. Over the next few weeks...

Happy Birthday my darling little gnome. Two years ago yesterday you made me a mama. And the happiest mama on earth at that.

Home again, home again, jiggity jig...

...to quote one of Tilly's favorite nursery rhymes. And you can bet we were all doing a jiggety gig when Papa finally came home. He returned from his Nicaraguan Mancation a little skinnier for not having eaten in a few days, and a lot hairier for not having shaved in several.

At breakfast I asked Matilda if she was happy to have her papa home. She said emphatically, "YEAH! Whiskers!"

So while Chace lost weight on his involuntary fast, I gained it cheating on our diet. In a nutshell, Chace got skinnier, I got fatter, and the girls?
They got sassier.

That old cup. It's runnethin' o'er again.

And I'll give you two guesses as to why.

It's been an excellent day. Mostly because I let it be. Because I remembered that I'm a mom first and foremost, not a housekeeper and not a cook and not a laundress. Sometimes I forget. Why do I undermine my own happiness so and waste precious hours feeling like my babies are getting in the way of my accomplishment? Can you think of any greater accomplishment than raising a tiny human? Tonight I sat on the couch playing with Eloise as Matilda ran around like a wild brumby (we just watched The Man from Snowy River) and I had a vivid flashback of sitting in that same spot with Tilly at Eloise's age. It felt kind of like having the wind knocked out of me. Surreal. Now Matilda is negotiating for "five more minutes!" of play before bed. Eloise is threatening to roll over (post edit: she rolled twice yesterday! Yikes!) Where did they go, my babies? "Time flies on wings of lightning; We cannot call it back" I cringe to think of the days I've wasted in frustration. I'm so glad that, as Anne says, "Marilla, isn't it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?"

(And maybe we'll just forget what Marilla says back... it's too true... "I'll warrant you'll make plenty in it," said Marilla. "I never saw you beat for making mistakes, [Rivka] Anne." Ah, well. We'll see.)
